The Samoerian military, a volunteer force in a nation of pacifists and media pundits, must make extremely efficient use of a very small number of troops while avoiding almost any losses whatsoever. In keeping with this military philosophy, the Samoerian military uses a very small number of elite, versatile troops. The military is split up into two branches:
1) The Imperial Samoerian Navy (Imperial being a relic from a previous regime, which, the Navy having never been significantly reorganized, remains around today)
2) The Samoerian Mobile Infantry
The Imperial Samoerian Navy (NIS)
The Samoerian Naval Force is not, obviously, really a Navy but rather a force of interstellar vessels. Samoerian Naval ships are designed for maximum efficiency, automation and safety for what crew are necessary. The ships are spheres of thick Pasteel, surrounded by energy and gravity shields. The interiors have no gravity, instead relying on magnetic boots and ladders, however any number of environmental factors may be changed via various controls during a boarding. Imagine having a crew of boarding marines crushed by 10000Gs upon stepping through a breach... bad news.
Samoerian Naval Personnel must go through at least a year of intensive holographic training before stepping into any military vessel, to increase odds of survivial.
The Samoerian Mobile Infantry (IMS)
The Infantry is, traditionally, a very dangerous job. So, when the job of making it less dangerous fell to the Samoerian military Scientist-Philosophers (a popular buzzword in Samoerian think-tanks), they thought long and hard and finally decided to just rip off Heinlein. Every Mobile Infantryman goes through at least a year of intensive training inside and outside of his signature Mechanized Weaponry Platform. Speaking of which, the Mechanized Weaponry Platform (WARMAKE class, for your average infantryman) is one of the more important parts of the IMS. The MWP is, in essence, a big, badass mech covered from head to toe in armor and weaponry. The Infantryman is house in the cockpit, which is in a different place inside each mech to make pinpointing said pilot more difficult. The rest is all armor and fiber optics, loaded up with customized munitions and the like. Soldiers are encouraged to take lots of time to customize their MWP (pronounced 'mawp'), like adding decals and changing colors and etc. All in all, war is treated like a viedogame to desensitize the soldiers from violence. This makes retirement difficult, so being in the IMS is usually a life-time profession.
Types of MWPs:
WARMAKE- Standard model for Infantrymen. Contains Flypack, Armor, Targetting Systems, Weapon Loadouts, etc.
PEACEMAKE- Stealth model for Snipers, Spies and Assassins. Contains Flypack, reduced armor, Targetting Systems, Rifle Loadout, Camo, etc.
WARGOD- Specialty model for Samoerian Special Entities Taskforce. Contains Variblaster loadout, increased armor and general improvements. Ridiculously expensive to make.
WAREND- Heavy Weapons model for Artillery, Bombers. Contains improved Flypack and Targetting systems, Artillery loadout, plasma cannons, etc. Not very mobile.
PSIWAR- Psionic model for Psychic Warriors. Made of a special mentally reactive material, allowing it to change form near-constantly. Extremely dangerous.
PEACEMIND- Comm model for Commanders, Comm Officers and Propaganda Officers. Contains a huge broadcasting tower (which does nothing, units will waste time firing on it to try to stop the terrible noises emanating over their radio frequencies), advanced hacking tools, camo, hologram projector. Very few weapons.
The Samoerian Special Military Applications Divison
Technically a divison of the Samoerian Department of Sciences, the SMAD (called 'Mads' by troops) are an elite crop of geneticists who design non-sentient killing machines for use in combat both on the ground and in space (its amazing what some Synthetic Lungs can do).
The Black Ops Diplomats (DCON)
A subsection of the Diplomatic Corps with a significantly larger budget than its parent organization. The DCON is entirely above government control, and indeed none of their projects ever fall within Senatorial knowledge due to the mind-scans. The DCON are also expert spies, assassins and general shifty guys. Think the CIA if the CIA did everything the CIA supposedly does. Planets that are supposed to be sub-Primative have been known to fire Interstellar Ballistic Missiles at Mokugan Slaver-Miner vessels in the past, and the DCON obviously takes no credit, but smiles while doing so. General equipment for a DCON agent includes translators, holographic disguises, hidden weaponry of all sorts, hacking tools, variblasters and all manner of experimental technology.
The Mercenary Legion
While the Samoerian government is loathe to throw away thelives of its citizens, it is less loathe to throw away the lives of non-citizen mercenaries. This has lead to the formation of the Mercenary Legion (not the Samoerian Mercenary Legion, just the Mercenary Legion). The ML (often called the MLitary, a member is called a MLitant. Ha, those mercenaries have a great sense of humor!) is used for all the jobs that are just too dangerous to sacrifice Samoerian lives. Sure, it sounds like a big rip-off, but the mercenaries get paid exorbitant amounts from the economically powerful government of Samoeria. One important thing to note, however, is that the mercenaries are still held to the Samoerian Military Code of Conduct so atrocities are out.
*A Variblaster is an advanced piece of technology capable of firing any material from its muzzle (via the reorganization of protons, neutrons, etc.) at velocities significantly nearing lightspeed. They are very, very expensive.
